FAMBRAS and UNHCR Discuss Projects for Refugees in Brazil

On Thursday (30th), the Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil (FAMBRAS) hosted representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for a strategic meeting on projects aimed at supporting refugees in Brazil and Latin America.

The meeting brought together key leaders from both institutions. Representing FAMBRAS were Dr. Mohamed Charanek, Legal Director; Delduque Martins, Director of Projects and Institutional Relations; and Nazelie Bozian, Assistant to the Presidency. From UNHCR, Mr. Mohammed Abu Asaker, Senior Partnerships and Philanthropy Officer of UNHCR in Washington, DC, USA; Mr. Davide Torzilli, UNHCR Representative in Brazil; Ms. Samantha Federici, Director of Private Sector Partnerships at UNHCR Brazil; and Ms. Marília Cintra Correa, Coordinator of Private Partnerships and Philanthropy participated.

During the meeting, Delduque Martins presented the humanitarian and social assistance projects developed by FAMBRAS in Brazil and Latin America, in partnership with important global humanitarian organizations. Mr. Mohammed Abu Asaker presented UNHCR’s Islamic Philanthropy Program, which seeks to mobilize resources and partnerships aligned with the principles of Islamic charity. This program aims to provide support and assistance to refugees and vulnerable communities in various regions of the world – currently, 140 million refugees and displaced persons worldwide. The potential expansion of this initiative in Latin America, with the support of FAMBRAS, represents a significant opportunity to enhance humanitarian actions and create a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people in vulnerable situations.

Another topic discussed was the Zakat Fund for Refugees, aimed at securing resources for refugee support projects. Strategies to implement this initiative in Brazil were explored, aiming to engage the Muslim community and institutions involved in Islamic philanthropy.

The alignment between UNHCR’s guidelines and the values of solidarity and assistance promoted by FAMBRAS reinforces the synergy between the two institutions, creating a solid foundation for the development of joint projects that will benefit refugees and vulnerable communities throughout Latin America.

FAMBRAS reaffirms its commitment to promoting humanitarian initiatives and contributing to solutions that strengthen the rights and dignity of refugees in Brazil.
